Becoming The MSP of the Future Starts Now

AI requires MSPs to make a tremendous transition from what they do for customers today, to what customers will expect tomorrow. This is as extreme as a plumber transitioning to become a brain surgeon.

What we today call MSPs used to be called “infrastructure partners.”

What we did most was to install, manage, and maintain computer and networking infrastructure for our customers. Servers, storage, switches, routers, peripherals, and the software stacks that ran on them.

When my earliest customers asked how they could use their infrastructure to run software that was custom-designed to run their businesses, we had to explain that we were not “AppDev” partners. We built the infrastructure and AppDev partners wrote the software. We provided the plumbing and they provided what would flow through it.

My preferred metaphor was that we provided the canvas, “but we ain’t got no paint.”
